Studio Culture : Sheffield visit ;
A full programme of visiting 4 different art studios today. Starting of at Persistance works, Yorkshire artspace.
The impact of this artspace hard to ignore, with incredible practices taking place on at least 5 different floors. The dynamic manager - Jedi mind talked his way thru the amazing set up that they have here. Two exhibition spaces, with one holding current work by Paul Housley, which were direct and pure colourful canvases, down to earth and observational colourful, impasto mark making, made an impact. The other a group show.
Managed by four people, the studio space had more industrial or business style practitioners in the first few floors. Ecosystem - 400k per year to run.
We moved onto the next Yorkshire art space- Exchange. A different set up but housing a variety of artists. A little more DIY, we had a chat with Andy Jackson, who makes impressive work, which is inspired by Street and Mark making. What kind of balance between roadsigns, layers of paint and gestural abstract marks. Which i really enjoyed. Large scale outcomes with high detail but seemingly accidental.identified potential ways to develop my practice with more context to the viewing frame of say YouTube and more prominent reference to road markings. I was blown away by the originality and scale of his pieces with detailed renderings of distressed fly posters and labels. His use of contrast of textures and surfaces from graphic renders of posters to distressed urban surfaces. He talks about the challenge that painting offers, within the context of the digital world. He talks about the compositional designs that he makes are to jarr the viewer - to make them see sthing wrong in the work so they look at the work for longer. His work explores different ways to exhibit his work- shop fronts, 3d paintings, tiny works. A real inspiration to me and started me thinking about different contrasts in my own work, bringing out more road markings, the viewers frame or window on the live actions prescence in my cycling paintings.
The third stop on our art studio which is pretty large such as managed by one guy. He has managed to space for 29 years so he has pretty much most of the fabric of the studio spaces and maintenance fee setting off and the management for me artists and their studios. One thing which is out for me was when he mentioned the complications experienced with individual artists which caused major issues. This is something I hadn't really anticipated in terms of managing an arse face. We got around a couple of spaces and saucer amazing portrait work with a guy who was creating a Minotaur portrait. Phillips and I didn't seem to be the same kind of community five in the studio for more. It was run as a functioning studio space rather than a community and find out. I mean Artist would come and work and go. Do you have any difference is that it's run by one man and whatever he says seems to go.
The final start wants to go to Gloam This was very much a DIY serious face reclaim from being a punk venue. I'm gallery space great seeing as you walk in and you have individuals spaces within the two floors. This had a much more communal vibe to it, but I do feel that it was a freezing and unwelcoming
basic space.
questions that were raised from this experience:
Four very different set ups for artists to thrive. One business model, one hard graft suck it and see model and one Diy model
Takeaways : Artist studio Model Set up :
Management team or person - Organisation of running costs etc, marketing of the space
Studio spaces of different sizes locations in the space - paying per square metre
Workshop space
Gallery space for exhibitions as well as Open studio events
No rates for small businesses of LTD companies
Heath and safety and risk assessments
My work and anything inspiring....
Paintings Cav1 oil sketches and Peloton1 are developing nicely. Starting to use spray paints in some sections, am also starting to consider batch mixing of oil colour, as i do with acrylics. So as to optimise the mark making in the work. Sand and also other mediums to explore. I am also looking at combining photos so that there is the action contrasted with the road markings and lines. Began working from the gig starting points.
